This document shares the findings of a study on the potential underwater radiated noise (URN) impacts of LNG development on marine mammals in the Gulf of California. The report examines the effects of URN from LNG tanker traffic on migratory and resident whales, as well as related impacts on air quality and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

A majority of International Maritime Organization member states continue to support the framework – which aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from ships in line with its 2023 greenhouse gas reduction strategy – despite significant pressure from the US, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Panama and Liberia.

As this week’s meeting of the International Maritime Organization’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (IMO, MEPC 84, April 27-May 1) closes today, the Clean Shipping Coalition welcomed support from the majority of member states for the IMO’s Net-Zero Framework (NZF) despite pressure from US, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Panama, Liberia, and other petro-states, but called out the threat of further delays to adoption, which is now scheduled for early December.
